On the other hand, my biggest problem with the CX-5 is its handling. No, I don't mean its handling in a bad way (which I don't personally think it is), but rather that I find it "sloppy" in the sense that it's much too sensitive for use in anything other than tight parking lots. Before I go into more detail, take a look at our Mazda CX-5 prototype and you can clearly see that the metal used to shape the hood kinks into an aerodynamic spoiler, and it only adds to the CX-5's already performant handling. It's like a sheet of paper with the wind on it. The Toyota Corolla, for example, does not have this effect, and I doubt it's due to the car's 17.6-inch alloy wheels.
Anyway, my problem with the CX-5's handling is exacerbated by the suspension and brakes. For some reason, the Mazda's front suspension is equipped with half-elliptic springs rather than compression springs, and what that means is that the front of the car always feels a little pushy when you drive over a bump. Combine that with the CX-5's somewhat concealed, regular-width rotors and you get a product that feels a little loose. The bad news is that these things don't get addressed until upgraded models of the CX-5 are released, but I always felt that changing the suspension and brakes should be an option. After all, the CX-5's chassis is robust enough to be able to handle the heavy focus that Mazda's engineers wanted to put on the dynamics side of the game.
Speaking of off-road behavior, I have to confess that driving through creeks and water passages is an enormous thrill for anyone who grew up on more modest vehicles. But I have to say that the CX-5 does not automatically make me feel like a kid again. Yes, it's a big, heavy, awkward and well-equipped SUV, and it feels like it could be a bit more user-friendly, but it would be a lie to say this little Mazda is something other than an outstanding off-road vehicle.
