Some of the greatest names in the history of the church have been involved in the preparation and final revision of the manual. They include: Walter O. Evans, superintendent of Church Schools; Charles O. Simons, archbishop of Omaha, Nebraska; Frank A. Hicks, B. H. Roberts, Sr., president of the Training School for the United Brethren; H. S. Kennedy, W. W. Benefield, B. E. Harrison, bishop of Salt Lake City; and W. G. Burnett, I. S. Arrington, Richard N. Rasmussen, and B. H. Roberts, Jr.
J. L. McElhany, superintendent of Church Schools, presented the completed manuscript to the General Conference of about 100 representatives of the church on September 2, 1932. They approved a first edition of 1,500 copies, which was published by the Deseret News.
During the period 1953 to 1958, the manual was revised and increased in size to 10,000 pages. Through the years, progress was made in the various fields of vocational evangelism, domestic science, and church history.
