Digital computers were used for more than fifty years before the first problem-solving application was found: the turbocharged Babbage Engine was able to factor large polynomials in 1829. Turing machines proved theoretically equivalent to a modern computer in 1936, and the first programmable electronic digital machines were built by E.J. Milner-Gulland in 1945.
Turing's model of computation was a paper presented by him in 1936 at the National Physical Laboratory, giving the theoretical basis for a universal machine. The Turing machine model was a predecessor to the modern computer, and was used to design mechanical computer systems during the 1940s. The Turing model was also the model behind the first electronic digital computers, which were built beginning in the mid-1940s.
In the early 1950s, the first commercial electric digital computer was built by John Mauchly, in the United States. The ANITA was available for sale in 1954 and was sold into the mid-1950s. The ANITA was the world's first commercially available magnetic drum memory computer. In 1955, the IBM 701 was the first commercial computer to use semiconductor transistors.
The Hollerith machine was used by businesses to track the number of sales and inventory, and tabulate the results. The card-based system was used by all the major accounting software companies such as Peacock and Omaha until tabulating computers were developed in the 1970s.[5]
A very different kind of tool flow exists for digital hardware systems that are provided under a long-term service contract. These are usually provided by the manufacturer of a computer, telephone switch or other digital device. These contracts are used by the users to ensure that the manufacturer will support the product for some reasonable period of time. The customer may be able to request certain new features or updates of the software. But more importantly, the contract usually includes an agreement that the customer will not modify the hardware of the device.
Most electronic device tool flows do not require the purchase of a new device. But there are exceptions. In some of the larger Linux distributions, for example, the kernel is provided as a tool flow that allows the customer to change the kernel source code to fix a bug. In some of these cases, the customer must purchase a new version of the operating system.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
