PuTTY is an excellent Telnet client that's free and open source. It's available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and almost any other platform. While Windows Telnet servers have been cracked open using telnetenable.c, PuTTY is safe. You should be able to use PuTTY to play with and debug a machine in a lot of situations where a Windows telnet client would be unusable.

This is the first script I've ever written and it's more an analysis project than anything. I'm simply trying to learn what must be done to reverse engineer this. Also, I've never written a shell script before. It's all IRC talk right now, but the analysis will be using this, of course. It's a script that causes your router's web interface to send traffic over various protocols, such as netbios, as if it were Telnet. If you have a router running Netgear firmware, it should already have this ability, but the feature is hidden. I'm adding it here for reference.
This is a feature of Netgear routers which can be turned on by logging into the web interface. At the bottom right hand corner, there's a toggle to switch between telnet mode and unicast mode. Telnet isn't a standard networking protocol, but some routers such as the R8000 use it to communicate with a remote client. The R7000 in particular requires that you connect to the server using telnet and TelnetEnable to get a login shell.
In practice, this could successfully be used to forward data to TCP port 16/23. It was also possible to redirect the packet to the telnet console port, however this required customization of the configuration file. Luckily, Netgear created a set of modified files for use with the client telnetEnable.exe.Netgear provided modification toolset came with the modified firmware and instructions on how to use the programs found at the following locations. d2c66b5586
