The first book I’d recommend is Animals in Motion by Eadweard Muybridge. He’s the man who pioneered motion photography, and this book is a classic of the genre. He took countless long exposures of live animals and their movements in motion.

The first section is a biography, and what a fascinating one. Muybridge grew up in the 19th century, and lived through the Victorian age. He was an engineer and a mathematician, and he became a pioneer in the field of motion photography. In his lifetime, he set up the first permanent motion picture studio, and made several photographic tours of the world, including one to South Africa. When he died in 1904, he bequeathed his entire collection of photographs to the University of California, and it later became the Eadweard Muybridge Archive.

The second section of the book is a discussion of the mechanics of animal locomotion, including definitions of the terms ‘striking’ and ‘strikingly’ (essential in understanding the following); the paths of force used by animals to move; the principles of energy; and the principles of speed (velocity). This section is also a good read, and the author is an expert on the topic.

This section of the book explores his life and work, and includes reproductions of many of his photographs, along with discussion of the animals themselves. It’s a fascinating read, with lots of information about the early American 20th century, and I found myself feeling like I was there, listening to a lecture.

The show was created in 2003, and the series premiered to Nickelodeon viewers on August 15, 2003. A total of 52 episodes have been broadcast, and the show is currently in its third season. At the time of this review, the show was airing on cable channel Nicktoons Network. The first season was set in northern British Columbia, and the second season was set in Africa.
